Return from the Depths

Oct 25, 2010

Around five years ago, a Kevlar prototype for the Destiny disappeared from the shores of the research and development pond at the Mad River Canoe headquarters in Easley, SC. At first, the general consensus was that it had been stolen. Apparently it just blew into the pond during a storm, being a light weight Kevlar hull and all, and because it did not yet have flotation chambers, it sunk. Five years later, the pond dried up enough to retrieve the missing canoe from the bottom of the pond, and much to our pleasant surprise, the seats are still fully functional, the hull is intact, and it could be paddled today.

The best moment (unfortunately not caught on film) was when we pulled it up on bank. The water started to drain over the stern, along with a family of catfish who had apparently made a home out of the hull!

Cleaning up nicely!
